The Formulation Process
Five steps.
Every formula.
No exceptions.
This is the complete process — from research to your dog's bowl. Every Dr. Paws product goes through all five steps before it reaches you.
STEP 01: SCIENCE FIRST
We start with the research, not the trend.
Before a single ingredient makes it into a Dr. Paws formula, our veterinary nutritionists review the published research on that ingredient in dogs.
We're looking for a credible biological mechanism — a clear explanation of how this ingredient would produce the claimed benefit in a dog's body. We're also looking for clinical evidence: ideally peer-reviewed trials in dogs, and where those don't exist, well-designed studies in humans or other mammals that can be reasonably applied.
If an ingredient doesn't have that foundation, it doesn't make it into a Dr. Paws product. No matter how popular it is. No matter how good it looks on a label.
Step 02: the critical step
Dosing — the part that actually determines whether it works.
This is where most supplement brands cut corners. And it's the most important part of the entire process.
Here's something the industry doesn't advertise: it is completely legal to include an impressive-sounding ingredient at a dose so small it is biologically inert. Tiny enough to list on the label. Not nearly enough to do anything useful. This practice even has a name — fairy dusting — and it is extremely widespread.
We got burned by it ourselves before starting Dr. Paws. The joint supplements we bought for Bear contained real ingredients, just not at real doses. That's what sent us down this path in the first place.
At Dr. Paws, every active ingredient is included at a dose within the range that published research shows to be clinically meaningful. These are not arbitrary numbers. They reflect the doses used in studies that demonstrated actual results.
Example sample doses from our range
6B CFU
Probiotics in Gut Glow — upper end of the clinically studied range
300mg
MSM in Hip & Joint Care — reflecting the therapeutic anti-inflammatory dose
300mg
Colostrum in Allergy & Immunity — the dose targeting immune modulation
Step 03: Vet Review
Veterinary advisory board review — every formula.
Before any formula goes into production, it goes through a formal review by our veterinary advisory board.
These are qualified Australian veterinarians — not figureheads or logo endorsers — with hands-on expertise in companion animal nutrition, internal medicine and dermatology. The review process covers every ingredient and every dose, potential interactions between ingredients, safety for long-term daily use, compliance with Australian pet supplement guidelines, and accuracy of all label claims.
No Dr. Paws product has ever gone into production without this review being completed and approved. That is not something we are willing to compromise on.
Step 04: Independent Testing
Third-party testing —every single batch.
Once a production batch is complete, samples go to an accredited independent laboratory for testing. Not the manufacturer's in-house lab. An independent one. This adds cost to every unit we sell. We absorb it because there is no other honest way to tell you that what's on the label is actually in the product.
Every batch is tested for:
- Potency — do the active ingredient levels match what's on the label?
- Probiotic viability — for our probiotic products, are the live bacteria actually alive and at the declared CFU count?
- Heavy metals — arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium within safe limits
- Microbial contamination — no harmful bacterial or mould contamination
- Undeclared allergens — no cross-contamination with undeclared protein sources
This adds cost to every unit we sell. We absorb it because there is no other honest way to tell you that what's on the label is actually in the product.
Step 05: Palatability
The chew has to be something your dog will actually eat.
The most scientifically perfect formula in the world is worthless if your dog spits it out.
Our soft chew base and flavour profiles are developed and tested for palatability before any formula is finalised. We test across different breeds, sizes and taste preferences. If a formula isn't passing palatability testing, it goes back to development — not to market.
This sounds obvious. You'd be surprised how often it's an afterthought.

The one thing we will never do.
We will not use a proprietary blend to hide the individual doses of active ingredients in our formulas.
Proprietary blends are a common industry practice. A formula lists five ingredients under a single combined weight, with no indication of how much of each is actually present. It protects the "secret formula" — but it also prevents you from knowing whether any individual ingredient is present at a meaningful dose.
We don't have a secret formula to protect. We have an honest formula to be proud of.
Every active ingredient is listed individually with its exact amount on every product. Our Ingredient Transparency page goes even further — ingredient by ingredient, across our entire range, with an explanation of what each one does and why we chose the dose we use.
Most Supplements don't deliver what they promise
We compared Dr. Paws Gut Glow against the leading competitor on clinical dosing, ingredient transparency, and overall formulation quality. The difference is clear.

From nutritional supplements to personalized treatment plans, Dr. Paws is dedicated to providing high-quality products that cater to the unique needs of dogs and cats, promoting their vitality and happiness.
The time it takes to see the first results can vary depending on the specific product and the individual pet's health condition. Generally, for many pet care products, you might start noticing some initial changes within 4 weeks of regular use. However, it's important to remember that each pet is unique, and factors like age, health status, and the product's intended effects can influence how quickly results become visible. Always follow the recommended usage instructions provided with the product and consult with a veterinarian if you have specific concerns about your pet's progress.
While the initial cost may be higher, many pet owners find that the long-term benefits, including improved health, reduced vet bills, and overall pet happiness, justify the investment in premium pet care products. It's important to assess your pet's specific needs and consult with a veterinarian to determine the best food option for their well-being.
The prices of premium pet care products, including specialized dog food, can be higher than standard options for several reasons:
- Quality Ingredients: Premium pet foods often use higher quality, human-grade ingredients that are carefully selected to provide optimal nutrition for pets. These ingredients can be more expensive to source and process.
- Nutritional Value: Premium dog food is formulated to provide a higher nutritional value, ensuring that pets receive all the essential nutrients they need for their overall health and well-being.
- Specialized Formulas: Some premium dog foods are designed for specific dietary needs, such as sensitive stomachs, allergies, joint health, etc. These specialized formulations can involve more research and development, leading to higher costs.
- Research and Development: Creating high-quality dog food involves research, testing, and ongoing development to ensure the best possible nutrition. These efforts contribute to the overall cost.
- Ethical Practices: Some premium pet food brands focus on ethical sourcing, sustainable practices, and humane treatment of animals during the production process, which can increase costs.
- Manufacturing Standards: Premium dog food often adheres to higher manufacturing standards, including more stringent quality control and safety measures, which can lead to increased costs.
- Health Benefits: Premium dog food may offer more health benefits, such as improved coat quality, better digestion, and joint support, which justify the higher price point.
- Brand Reputation: Established premium pet food brands often have a reputation for quality and effectiveness, which can contribute to the higher prices.
